Parameters of Online Therapy
Online psychotherapy can be a very warm and professional experience when some important parameters are in place. These four simple guidelines help re-create the counselling experience that one would have in-office.
The Four Parameters
1. Screen and Connection: Persons should have access to a full-screen computer that is stationed, hands-free for optimal face to face contact, as well as a high speed internet connection to ensure a seamless conversation.
2. Comfort: Persons should have access to a very quiet, comfortable and fully private space in their home. This includes a relaxing chair to sit upright. It is also a good idea to have Kleenex nearby.
3. Privacy and Space: Optimally, persons can arrange with Jamie and their families to do their hour of counselling when they are home alone. This can be a regular time that is determined with their families and is supported by them each week. This allows for the space and quiet that is needed for deeper therapy to unfold: it is more difficult for people to do therapy when they know that there is family close by or outside the door. Jamie has morning, afternoon and evening appointments available with flexible hours.
4. Distraction-Free: During the hour of counselling, persons should be free from any other obligations, responsibilities, and distractions. This includes babysitting/care-taking, work and phone calls. This allows a person’s attention to be fully present to counselling, similar to an in-person session.
